The Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will implement the changes which already took effect on January 31, 2025 and notified in the Canada Gazette II. The new rules apply to electronic travel authorisations (eTAs), work permits, study…

As per the new rules, immigration and border services officers have the authority to cancel eTAs and TRVs on a case-by-case basis — for instance, if individuals become inadmissible, provide false information, have a criminal record, or if their their circumstances change.

According to a report by Financial Express, if the official is not satisfied that someone will leave Canada at the end of their authorised period of stay or if the document was issued based on an administrative error, it can also lead to the cancellation of study and work permits. It can also be cancelled if the permit holder becomes a permanent resident or is deceased.

Immigration documents of students who refuse a work or study permit after applying for it, can also be cancelled. In a statement IRCC said, “IRCC will continue to improve processes and invest in tools to secure our borders and protect Canada’s and protect Canada’s immigration system.”

Foreign nationals who have been granted temporary residence in the country as visitors, workers, or students must comply with admissibility and eligibility requirements under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and the Regulations.

TRV or eTA are mandatory for all temporary residents to travel and enter the country, unless exempted otherwise. TRV can be issued either for a single entry or has a validity of 10 years with multiple entries. However travellers from visa-exempt .countries require an eTA – which is electronically linked to a traveller’s passport and allows for multiple entries, up to 5 years or until the passport expires – to fly to Canada.

Canada is making concerted efforts to maintain strict control over its borders while ensuring genuine travellers and workers can enter the country hassle-free. Border Services Officers have the final say on whether a temporary resident applicant is allowed to enter and remain in the country at the port of entry.

Travellers may be turned back at the airport or a port of entry in the case of their document being cancelled before they enter Canada.
